FAQ
Are these tools as good as the expensive, proprietary tools?
In most cases, no.
If you need enterprise-level functionality and support, and the tool is critical to your business, we recommend paying for proprietary tools.
If you need 80% of the functionality for less than 20% of the cost, No Vampire Squids is for you.
What makes these applications fair?
Modern software is beautiful: marginal costs and transaction costs are approximately zero. Everyone in the world should have access to good software. However, modern software businesses often put profits over users.
We believe that software should be fair. This means that:
- Your data belongs to you
- Open standards/formats are used as much as possible, making it easy for you to take your data to other applications
- Clear, upfront pricing that is based on costs and remaining accessible to as many people as possible
- Profits are shared with creators, not investors
How are the applications free? What's the catch?
Much of this software has been developed by people to solve their own problems, and not as a business. These people have nobly shared their code with the world. The software is available under open source licenses (e.g. GNU AGPL) granting users the freedom to copy and distribute software fairly.
The source code is available, e.g. on GitHub. Depending on the license, you have the freedom to used, edit, and distribute however you like. You can learn how to compile and build software on your own computer, or you can click some buttons to set it up on our servers.
How are the creators rewarded?
80% of our profits are given back to the software community: to the authors, open source projects used in No Vampire Squids, and the wider open source community.
